Freud believed that if he thought of something, it must be true. Furthermore, he believed he had a responsibility to share his amazing thoughts with the rest of humankind. One of those thoughts was that parenting produces the person. In other words, if an adult has personal problems, it’s a sure bet he was parented badly. Even today, most therapists will try to connect a person’s problems with aspects of his or her childhood as if there’s a clear cause-and-effect relationship. However, it turns out that parenting does not produce the child.

Nope. Me neither. Anyone who mutilated themselves with razor blades or sharp knives, stuck pins through their eyelids and tongues, or went around dressed in black complaining about how awful life was? No, none of that. How about anyone who physically threatened a teacher or called a teacher a vile name in front of the class? Again, no and no. I then pointed out to him that every single young person in every high school in America today knows at least one other young person in every one of those categories.

Even today, most therapists will try to connect a person’s problems with aspects of his or her childhood as if there’s a clear cause-and-effect relationship. However, it turns out that parenting does not produce the child. It is an influence, and a fairly strong one at that, but lots of very well-adjusted people were parented very badly, and lots of sociopaths were parented very well. In fact, not one of Freud’s theories has passed the test of the scientific method. Nevertheless, there are still a good number of therapists who base their treatments on Freud’s theories.
